Calling All Grill Masters – Memorial Day BBQ Recipes!

Memorial Day BBQs have always been events at our house to look forward to––sunshine, spring temperatures, the smell of fresh cut grass and yes, grilled. meats. Like many Americans across the country, we uncover our grill, check to make sure we have enough propane, dust off the lawn and deck furniture, and plan the menu. Grilled meats, salads, drinks and any friends and family who are in town are welcome.

Memorial Day is a day of Honor first. Let's remember that this holiday is a day for remembering the brave men and women who died while serving our country and keeping America safe so we can enjoy our freedom (and BBQs) in comfort and safety. As you are reading this post, let's take a moment of silence to honor and think of those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Now, our problem for Memorial day 2016 is that Judy and I are in Shanghai on a research trip, eating Shanghai breakfasts like locals and gathering new recipe ideas for another couple of weeks.

Sarah and Kaitlin are currently on a California road trip, driving through deserts, camping in the woods, hugging trees, and soaking up some sunshine on Hwy 1 (I'm sure they'll have a couple posts––and even recipes––to share from their trip…stay tuned), so they will not be manning the grill either.

So our old faithful grill sits at home alone on the deck. Our dearest Barley is with the dog sitter waiting in anticipation for that Memorial Day burger to drop from someone's plate onto the deck. Luckily, we have this blog, and we can reminisce together wherever we are and share with you our favorite BBQ menu ideas and grill recipes for your own Memorial Day weekend.  So while we are out of town, you all can get grilling – Happy Memorial Day folks!

1. Grilled Ribeye With Soy Butter Glaze

This Soy Butter glazed Ribeye is an amazing creation from our family grill master, Kaitlin. Give the glaze a try on any cut of beef you put on the grill!

2. BBQ Char Siu on the Grill

You may have seen our oven recipe for BBQ pork (Cha Siu), but this version on the grill will wow you and your friends. You'll have to hide some pieces if you want to make Roast Pork Fried rice or BBQ roast pork buns the next day, because if you leave it out, there won't be any leftovers!

This recipe takes some patience and some love on the grill, but it's worth it!

3. Beijing Style Lamb Skewers

A favorite in Beijing and throughout China that you MUST try this weekend. Spicy and delicious, these will make you a lamb lover if you aren't one already!

4. Three-Ingredient Grilled Chicken Wings

Simple, yet delicious – the secret is grilling them slowly to form a nice crust on the chicken. These inevitably show up on our grill several times throughout the spring and summer. It's one of our favorite ways to prepare chicken wings, period. Who would have thought that just Salt, Pepper and Chicken wings would make such a great dish!

5. Smoked Turkey Legs

Disney World has got nothing on these turkey legs. You control how smoky, salty or sugary you want them when you make these on your own!

6. Shrimp Tacos w/ Grilled Mango & Mint Guacamole

More of a seafood person than a meat person? Shrimp and mango cooked on the grill make an excellent combination. Wrap it all up into a soft taco with some guac, add fresh squeezed lime juice, and you will be very pleased eating this while sitting on your deck on a sunny Memorial Day weekend afternoon!

7. Smashed Asian Cucumber Salad

This smashed cucumber salad makes the quickest side dish you'll ever try. Lots of fresh garlic and chili oil gives it tons of flavor. Delicious and refreshing, this cucumber salad will be welcome at your Memorial Day BBQ, or any BBQ for that matter!
