I know, you've all heard the song. But have you heard of the Cake by the Ocean Cocktail?
(Probably not, because I think I just invented it!)
If you're not familiar with the song, you have to listen to it. The only reason you haven't heard it is if you exclusively listen to talk radio, because they play it almost too much. It's the Shake It Off of this year, so I imagine we'll all be singing along to it by the end of June.
Anyway, Jordan loves the song so I started wondering what it means. I'd never heard the term "Cake by the Ocean" before and although I was picturing me (in a bikini of course, it's my daydream where I'm skinny) on a lounge chair in Hawaii listening to the ocean and eating a huge slice of yellow layer cake. I tend to be on the naive side and not understand true meanings of songs until it's too late and Jordan's signing them at top volume in the middle of Target and then I'm like, oh honey be quiet.
So, naturally, I googled the meaning, to make sure it wasn't a euphemism for doing crack or something. According to Joe Jonas (as reported by MTV), the Swedish producers they were working with kept confusing "Sex on the Beach" with "Cake by the Ocean," creating the newest pop song for summer (and cocktails!)
Since a Sex on the Beach is a cocktail, I started thinking about what a Cake by the Ocean Cocktail would look like. Obviously, it could be anything, but it had to have cake vodka in it. Otherwise, it's not cake by the ocean! And when I think of ocean, I think of Hawaii. When I think of Hawaii, I think about Mai Tais, Maui Island Breeze Cocktails, and all things pineapple, orange, and coconut, and rum.
And this cocktail recipe was born: a Cake by the Ocean Cocktail made with cake flavored vodka, coconut rum, and orange and pineapple juices!
This cocktail comes together in less than 2 minutes. You can make a single cocktail for when you need an ocean by yourself, or you can make this into a pitcher in the same amount of time. There are no weird ingredients or messy making of any syrups or anything, you just pour, stir, and drink. That's my kind of cocktail recipe!
Pretty much this is it: mix equal parts coconut rum, cake vodka, OJ and pineapple juice over ice. I used 2 ounces for each of these glasses but you can make as much or as little as you want. Garnish with pineapple, cherry, and orange. If you want it to go further, make it skinny, or are making a pitcher, add club soda to taste. Did you know most skinny cocktails are just watered down with club soda? It makes the drink twice as big so it takes you longer to drink it.
You'll notice I rimmed the glass with sprinkles. That's not required, of course, but for photo sake it shows the "cake" part and differentiates the cocktail. It also makes it fun, because everything is more fun with sprinkles! To do this, you simply rim your glass with honey, agave, maple syrup, or corn syrup (pour some on a plate and dip the glass upside down in it) and then dip the rim in a bowl of sprinkles. Instant CAKE!
I'm going to request this drink in Hawaii this summer and see if they laugh at me. Then I really will have Cake by the Ocean…but in a tankini with a tent sized cover up.
Cake by the Ocean Cocktail
Yield: 1 - 12 servings
Like eating cake by the ocean! This easy cocktail can be made for one or a party in just a few minutes. Cake vodka, rum, orange juice, and pineapple juice mix to make a sweet cocktail that goes down easy and tastes like you're sitting and eating cake on the beach!
Ingredients:
To make a single cocktail:
- (All ingredients should be chilled, or you can shake them in a shaker with ice.)
- 2 ounces cake flavored vodka (may substitute vanilla or whipped cream flavor)
- 2 ounces coconut rum
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 2 ounces orange juice
- Club soda, optional
- Maraschino cherries, sprinkles, pineapple, and orange slices for garnish (optional)
To make a pitcher:
- (All ingredients should be chilled.)
- 2 cups cake flavored vodka (may substitute vanilla or whipped cream flavor)
- 2 cups coconut rum
- 2 cups pineapple juice
- 2 cups orange juice
- Club soda, optional
- Maraschino cherries, pineapple, and orange slices for garnish (optional)
- Ice or frozen pineapple to keep it chilled
Directions:
To make one cocktail: Place ice in a glass and pour vodka, rum, and both juices over the ice. Garnish with a cherry and/or wedges of pineapple and orange. To make the cocktail last longer or to dilute it, add club soda. To make the sprinkle rim: place about a tablespoon of honey or corn syrup on one plate and about a tablespoon of sprinkles on another. Dip the rim of an empty glass in the corn syrup, then dip in sprinkles.
To make a pitcher: Add vodka, rum, and both juices to a pitcher filled with ice or frozen pineapple. Add 2-4 cups club soda to make it more like a punch, or to feed more people, if desired. Place some orange slices and pineapple wedges in the pitcher.
As always with cocktails, taste is subjective. If you want it stronger, add more alcohol. If you want it less strong, add more juice or club soda.
